2011 JV Team Photo

It was such a pleasure to watch Henry Hunt and Mark Troxel develop this team that consisted of only a few players that had any experience.   A real applaud goes out to those first season players- what a crew.  This team held OES and handled Cleveland and others. Bravo to you all.. We’re looking forward to next year!

Hood River vs Central Catholic Game Report

Senior Night 2011 by Brian Shortt

A ‘Summary Report’ our  last week of regular season play.

5/13/11 – Hood River 12 vs Central Catholic 1

This was a great win for us.  It was senior night, and we had played them close before in a 7-6 (OT) win at Central Catholic.  Truthfully, the week was difficult for us.  We got blanked by OES, 18-0, on Monday.  Our line up shuffled in that game due to missing Jacob McHale at middie due to class attendance problems.  We suffered through a very bad game while they played their best.  On Thursday, we were greatly saddened to find out that our leading scorer and quarterback of our offense, Jesse Keopaseuth, was no longer able to play due to situation that happened earlier in the season while visiting Western Oregon University.  Despite all the bad and the resulting adjustments to our line up, our team refocused and accomplished what we set out to do, honor our seniors with a good win over Central Catholic.  We took over the game when we beagn scoring 3 minutes into the 1st quarter and didn’t give up a goal until the final 3 minutes of the game.  It was our best defensive effort of the season, as we were all over their shooters and took away their ability to dodge on offense.  Our close defensive unit combined for a season high 14 ground balls and showed excellent stickwork on clears.  Our defensive middie line of Woody Johnson, Matthew Harris and Austin Kiyokawa kept their leading scorer and all-state player, #6 Connor Dack, scoreless.  We hustled on rides and got the ball back 9 times.  We won ground balls all over the field, 43 to 19.  Our offense scored on a combination of shots off of dodges and feeds to our crease.  Decisions on when to shoot and when to pass off were excellent.  Our crease players scored 5 goals, a high for the year, with Brendan Kerr in his first start at crease attackman getting 4 of those and middie Pierce Whalen the other.  Our goalie, Malcolm McCurdy, had 8 saves for his best save percentage of the year, 89%.  After a tough start to the week, our team regrouped and showed tremendous character in playing excellent lacrosse to finish the regular season.  Third place in the Columbia Conference, and ranked #12 in Oregon, we are looking forward to hosting a playoff game this upcoming Wednesday.

 Score by quarter:

1st Q – HRV 2, Central Catholic 0

2nd Q – HRV 7, Central Catholic 0

3rd Q – HRV 10, Central Catholic 0

4th Q – HRV 12, Central Catholic 1

Scorers:

Attackman Brendan Kerr - 4 goals

Middie Miles Mayer – 3 goals, 1 assist

Hood River Varsity vs Grant

Subject: A quick update

Very dominating performance, we won 17-4.

By quarter
1st hrv 7. Grant 2
2nd hrv 11 Grant 2
3rd hrv 14 Grant 4

We got off to a quick start with Ryan Foster, Jesse Keopaseuth, Andrew Thompson and Miles Mayer all scoring in the first quarter.  Grant scored 2 on some unsettled situations before our defense put the clamps down.  Basically, aside from a slight letdown in the 3rd, we continued to play great team offense, getting lots of shots.  We dominated ground balls and time of possession – in the past, we have had some sloppy away games with Grant.  For this one, we kept operating smoothly, in a very clean game, 1 penalty for us and 2 for them.

Scoring:
Attackman Ryan Foster 4 goals, 3 assists
Attackman Jesse Keopaseuth 4 goals, 1 assist
Middie Andrew Thompson 5 goals
Attackman Eric Nance 1 goal, 2 assists
Middie Miles Mayer 2 goals
Attackman Brendan Kerr 1 goal
Middie Gabe Holste 1 assist

Hood River Varsity vs Wilson Game Report

Here are some quick details on the Wilson game from Coach Mac

1st Q hrv 1 Wilson 3
2nd Q hrv 8 Wilson 6
3rd Q hrv 9 Wilson 9
4rth Q hrv 9 Wilson 9
OT final hrv 10 Wilson 9

Trailing Wilson for the 1st quarter, we caught up and tied it at 3, after 3 minutes of the 2nd quarter.  It was 6-4 in Wilson’s favor with 4 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, when we went on a 4 goal run with goals by Jesse Keopaseuth, Ryan Foster and Andrew Thompson.  We entered the half with lots momentum ahead 8-6.  Wilson scored 2 in the middle of the 3rd to tie it.  Then, we went ahead 9-8 when Jesse Keopaseuth scored off a Miles Mayer feed on Man-up.  Wilson answered with a fast break goal by their big middie with 32 secs left in the 3rd.  With both goalies making some great stops and defenses tightening, it was a scoreless 4th quarter.  Malcolm had 14 saves and the Wilson goalie Zach Doughty had 15 in the game.  In overtime, Andrew Thompson won the face off, pulling forward to himself.  He ran down the field and threw it to Ryan Foster on the attack wing.  Ryan dodged, drew the defense and dumped it back up top to Andrew for a step down shot that found net inside the far post – game over in 11 secs of overtime.  And Andrew Thompson, who also scored the overtime winner vs Central Catholic, earned his new nickname “O.T.”, Overtime Thompson.

The game was a very good lacrosse game with both teams playing well and battling hard for the #3 spot in Columbia.  We kept our composure the whole game, played hard and made smart decisions with the ball.

Scorers:
Ryan Foster 4 goals, 1 assist
Jesse Keopaseuth 3 goals, 1 assist
Andrew Thompson 3 goals
Miles Mayer 1 assist

Close defense of David Dehart, Christopher Dirks and Brendan Lyddon shut their attackmen down as the game went on.  Our D middies Woody Johnson, Austin Kiyokawa and Matthew Harris, did a good job vs their dodgers up top.  Stats were very equal – shots, ground balls, face offs.

Hood River Varsity vs Bend Game Report

Please purchase the professionly taken team photo from Lifetouch.

Game Report from Mac Jackson
Sent: Sunday, April 24, 2011 10:30 AM

Subject: HRV Boys Lacrosse vs Bend
Final Score: Hood River = 17, Bend = 2

1st Q     Hood River = 4, Bend = 0
2nd Q    Hood River = 8, Bend = 1
3rd Q    Hood River = 11, Bend = 2

With an improved Bend team at the top of the High Desert Conference and playing some good out of conference games, this game looked to be a close one going in.  It turned into a very strong, dominating Hood River performance, as our offense kicked into high gear.  For the first time this year, we were scored lots of goals off of quick feeds to the crease and were led by multiple scorers.  Our defense was able to shutdown Bend’s dodgers, and Malcolm McCurdy made good saves on the outside shots we gave up.  Andrew Thompson was dominant on face offs, winning 8 out of 9.  The result shows our improvement in recent weeks, as this would have been a much closer game earlier in the season.

Scorers:
Jesse Keopaseuth 2 goals, 5 assists
Eric Nance 6 goals, 1 assist
Ryan Foster 6 goals
Jacob McHale 1 goal
Brendan Kerr 1 goal
Ian Hunt 1 goal

Other Stats:
Ground Balls: Hood River 31, Bend 21

Hood River vs Central Catholic Game Report

Subject: HRV Boys Lacrosse Central Catholic Game Report

We won an overtime thriller at Central Catholic on Monday.  We started fast, and Andrew Thompson scored 2 goals in the first 3 minutes of play.  Up 2-0, our offense went cold, and we would not score another goal until there was 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter.  Central Catholic scored 2 midway through the second quarter to make it 2-2 at half.  Plagued by early season type mistakes in transition and on offense, we struggled and could not get anything going, as Central Catholic continued to chip away at us with lengthy possessions on offense.  Fortunately for the most part, we played solid defense and our goalie, Malcolm McCurdy, had a great game with 12 saves for a save percentage of 67.  Their offense eventually went on a 4 goal run at the end of the 3rd quarter and beginning of the fourth.  The score with 9 minutes left in the game was 6-2 Central Catholic.  Finally, with 7 minutes left in the 4th quarter, Jesse Keopaseuth broke the ice and got a goal, but it remained 6-3 until Andrew Thompson scored with 3:40 left in the game.  With our offense going again, Jesse Keopaseuth scored his second at 2:23.  As the clock ticked down under 2 minutes, Central Catholic stalled on offense, as we pressured them on defense.  With less than a minute left, we got the ball back and cleared it for our last chance to tie it up.  At 44 secs, Jesse Keopaseuth got to the middle off a pick set by Eric Nance and in the midst of a triple team at a low angle took the only shot he could.  His spectacular, behind the back bounce shot scored, hitting the turf and bouncing into the net just under the cross bar.  Regulation play ran out with the game tied 6-6.  With the momentum gained from the quick comeback, the four minute sudden death overtime, ended quickly.  Andrew Thompson clamped and pulled forward to himself for a fast break on the face off, ran down the field and ripped a perfect shot, hitting the upper left corner – game over 8 seconds into overtime.  We have a history of pulling off some come from behind, overtime wins, and this one goes down in Hood River Lacrosse lore with the best of them.

Score by quarter:

            HRV     Central Catholic
1st          2                0
2nd         2                2
3rd          2                6
4th          6                6
3:52 OT   7                6

Scoring:
Middie Andrew Thompson  4 goals (game winner)
Attackman Jesse Keopaseuth 3 goals (tied it up)
Attackman Ian Hunt 1 assist

Other stats, ground balls, face offs and shots were relatively even.  Each team had 4 penalties and neither team scored on extra man offense.  Time of possession favored Central Catholic, and we had more turnovers.

We are looking forward to playing both a JV and Varsity game vs Bend at the HRVHS stadium this Saturday, 1 pm JV and 3 pm VAR.

Thanks,
Mac
